Distribution Of Bio-Diversity

Concept Explanation

Distribution Of Bio-Diversity

Distribution: Biodiversity, like many other things over the earth's surface, is very unevenly distributed. Flora and fauna diversity is a function of various factors viz. climate, altitude, soils the presence of other species, and above all, the anthropogenic factors. Diversity, generally, consistently measures higher in the tropics and lower in polar regions.

Even though terrestrial biodiversity declines from the equator to the poles, the same rule does not apply on aquatic ecosystems, especially in marine ecosystems. In addition, several assessments reveal tremendous diversity in higher latitudes in the marine ecosystems. However, generally terrestial biodiversity is up to 25 times greater than ocean bio-diverstiy.
